The Swedish Geropsychological Society, "Sveriges Geropsykologers Förening" (SGF) was formed in 1996 as a professional organisation within the Swedish Psychological Association.
The regulations and activities are governed by the terms and references that are in force within the Psychological Association. The Geropsychological Society started its activities in 1980 organized as a network for information and exchange of experience.
The Swedish Geropsychological Society is a section within The Swedish Gerontological Society (SGS).
SGF have the objectives to promote and advance gerontological research and implement geropsychological knowledge in practice and applied psychological work. In addition, it aims at representing as well as disseminating psychology within the multidisciplinary areas of gerontology.
SGF works so that older persons can be offered qualified advice and professional help in connection with diagnoses, counselling and interventions. Thus, care for elderly persons may develop according to the geropsychologist's knowledge of elderly persons own resources, wishes, and needs. SGF also works to provide information that can be used in the larger context of social planning.
The requirements of new generations of elderly people will produce an increased demand for qualified psychological contributions. The information available today on ageing and ageing related changes must be transferred to a wider group of people. In this case, geropsychologists have an important and growing role.
The tasks of the Society are to:
1. Support and overview the professional interest of the members.
2. Follow and promote such development work that concerns the geropsychological field.
3. Disseminate information.
4. Actively work for cooperation with other professional organisations within or with connections to this field.
5. Enhance contact between members.
6. Carry out research, provide answers to questions, and prepare remitted questions.
7. As commissioned by the Psychological association, represent and make decisions on individual questions and matters as they arise.
